Dowels

Dowelscome in two types of material wood and metal. Although this differentiates them they are both used for the same purpose to support and pin objects together. This object is ideal to do so because it the shape of a rod and can be cut down to size so that it can be used at the right scale and is strong enough to hold whatever object it is supporting. This is important as most of the pieces they are used within are usually objects that carry the burden of a great weight and are therefore needed to do so for long amounts of time if not constantly.

Wood dowels are often seen as being the small pegs that hold the shelves together firmly in pieces of furniture such as chests of drawers and book- cases this is the longer developed of the two that has been reliant upon for generations. The metal alternative is newer but as come to be as relied upon especially in stone creations to hold workings together for the amount of time required securely.

With the development of more complex technology and mass production machinery is now at the forefront of most industries more then ever and these rods have become more depended on as a result. The reliance of these simply designed and skilfully made components to machinery and structures used on such a large scale for often heavy and dangerous work is due to the strong support they can give any object because of the weight there tubular structure can support. The flexibility of the tube also means it can be used horizontally and vertically and it must be Reiter rated that this versatility supported by the fact these rods can be cut down to size to provide a level base for even support for any objects they are connecting.
